Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is a cultural heritage of the Incas hidden in a mountainous area northwest of Cuzco, Peru. It is believed to have served as a summer retreat for the Inca leaders, whose civilization was nearly wiped out by the Spanish colonial invasion in the 16th century.

It is the most famous symbol of the Inca Empire. It was built around 1450, but left untouched a hundred years later, when the Spanish conquered the Incan Empire. This site was forgotten by the international community, but not by the local community. The site was rediscovered by archaeologist from Yale University Hiram Bingham III who rediscovered it in 1911. Since then, Machu Picchu has become an attractive tourist attraction for both local and foreign tourists.

Machu Picchu was built in the ancient Incan style with polished stone walls. The main buildings are the Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun, and the Room of the Three Windows. These places are called the Sacred District of Machu Picchu.

The site has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, Machu Picchu is also one of the new Seven Wonders of the World, also receiving attention from the damaging effects of tourism (number of visitors to 400,000 in 2003). In September 2007, Peru made legal efforts with the result of reaching an agreement with Yale University to retrieve artifacts that Bingham had brought from the site in the early 20th century.

For hundreds of years, Machu Picchu's whereabouts were hidden from the outside world, and only known to the peasants living in the region. It wasn't until the summer of 1911 that the historic site was discovered by Bingham and his team of explorers, who were on a search mission for "lost" Inca cities. In an attempt to find Machu Picchu, Bingham and his team traveled on donkeys and on foot from Cuzco to the Urubamba Valley. In Urubamba, a local farmer told the group about some of the ruins located on top of a nearby mountain. The farmer referred to the site as Machu Picchu, which means "Old Peak" in the native Quechua language.
