Biography John Logie Baird
John Logie Baird is a Scottish engineer who was born on August 13, 1888. He can be considered as the inventor of television, because he was the first person to be able to broadcast moving images on television. Baird studied at Larchfield Academy, the Royal Technical College and the University of Glasgow.
In 1920, Baird returned to England and began researching how to transmit motion pictures along with sound. Due to a lack of sponsors, he used the materials he could find at the time. The first “televison” he built was made of cardboard, bicycle lights, glue, thread, and wax.
In 1924, he was able to transmit images from a distance of several meters. It was only in 1925 that he succeeded in broadcasting puppet shows. “The image of the doll appears on the screen which I think is very vivid. I made it! I could hardly believe my eyes and felt goosebumps with joy,” Baird explained at the time.
Not long after, Baird demonstrated his findings publicly at Selfridge's department store in London, England. In 1926, he showed his creation in front of 50 scientists from Britain's Royal Institution in London. One of the reporters present at the time wrote, "The images broadcast appear dim and sometimes blurry, but support the claim that the 'televisor,' Baird called it, is capable of transmitting and reproducing detailed movements, such as facial expressions, in a short period of time."
In 1927, Baird was able to transmit sound and images over a distance of 643 kilometers using telephone lines from London to Glasgow. In 1928, he sent the first television transmission across the Atlantic Ocean from London to New York. Starting in 1929, the BBC used Baird's technology to broadcast its first television programmes. However, the television that Baird invented at that time had its drawbacks. Due to the mechanical way it works, the resulting image is still blurry and flickering.
